Dreamweaver Tutorial - How To Add text to a page and format text

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

Let’s start adding some content to your home page. In the Files panel, double-click the “index.htm” file to open it for editing.

Select the Design view, if it’s not already selected. This is the easier way to enter and format text. Type some text in the editing area, like in the image below. The text can

be edited just like in any text editor. The difference is that as you type, Dreamweaver adds automatically the necessary HTML tags to your file. We will discuss about HTML

tags and the way you can edit them later in this tutorial.
Dreamweaver has a pretty good preview engine, and most of the times your page will show up in the browser window exactly the way you see it in the Design mode. To get a

better image, press the Preview icon and choose Preview in iexplore from the menu. If you haven’t saved your file, you will be prompted to do so. Choose Yes.

That’s not bad for starters! But let’s try to sparkle up the page a little bit. As you can see, the page has no title, so the default title (set up by Dreamweaver upon creation of

the page) is used. But we want to change the title from “Untitled Document” to “Home Page”.

Click on the edit box marked Title and change the title from “Untitled Document” to “Home Page”.

Now let’s play a little bit with the text settings and give your page an improved look. First, let’s select all the text and change the font. After selecting the whole text, click on

the combo box labeled Font to choose one of the font families.
A font family is composed of similar fonts and is recommended in case the user viewing your page is missing a font. Select the Verdana font family.

Now the text is a little too big. What we should do is change the font size. Click on the combo box labeled Size and select 12.

Now we want to highlight more the welcome message. We first need to select the text in question. Click again on the combo box labeled Size and this time choose 14.

Press on the button labeled Bold.

Now press on the Text Color button to change the color of the current selection. Let’s choose one of the blue colors.

We want to highlight the main sections of the text. To do so, we will insert some bullets. We start by selecting the first section. First press on the Bold button. Now press on

the Unordered List button. This has added a bullet to the selected section. We do the same for the other sections.

As you can see, some paragraphs have an unwanted indentation. What we do is select one of the paragraphs in question. Now press on the Text Indent button. We do the

same for the two remaining paragraphs.

We preview the page in the browser. As you can see, you can improve the aspect of your page by using some basic text formatting. This concludes the “Add text to a page and format text” section of the tutorial.

So you want to build a website but where do you start?

You could sit down and learn HTML code and try to code your website by hand using notepad, OR you can use Dreamweaver© the industries leading web design program.

This free dreamweaver tutorial will help get you started fast.

There’s no question about it. With Dreamweaver© you can create professional looking webpages even if your a beginner. But where do you start? Learning to use Dreamweaver© can be fun and simple.

Learning to Use Dreamweaver

Tutorial 1: Setting up a Dreamweaver site

Before you get into creating your website you have to set up your ’site’ in dreamweaver.

Your dreamweaver site is the local version of your website on your computer. It’s the one you work on before you upload it to the web.

Here’s the text Version:

1. Dreamweaver Basics1.1 Set up a web siteIn this section we will learn how to create a web site using the website creation wizard.Double-click the Dreamweaver icon on your desktop to open the program.

After Dreamweaver has finished loading, the start page will appear.

The start page is a quick launch tool that gives you the possibility to open recent items, create new web pages and web sites or create them using Dreamweaver’s gallery of templates.

To set up a new web site, press on the Dreamweaver Site… link from the Create New section of the start page. Another way to set up your web site is to go to Site > Manage Sites…,

press New… and choose Site from the dropdown menu.

A new window will open, which allows you to configure the new site, following several steps:

Editing Files, Testing Files, Sharing Files.

The first step is to select a name for your site. This is the name that you will later use to identify this project, when you will have more web sites created.

Let’s say we want to name this one “Company Web Site”. Type “Company Web Site” in the edit box and press Next >.

The next step is to choose whether to use a server technology. Using a server technology (like PHP, JSP or ColdFusion) is very useful when you are developing dynamic pages.

For example, let’s you have a products page, that contains hundreds of products, and you can see the details for each product, by clicking on it.

It is obvious that you can’t create a hundred HTML pages, one for each product.
What you need to do is use a database to store all your product information (specification, pictures) and use only one dynamic page to show the details.

Clicking on one of the products in the products page should redirect you to the details page and also transmit to this page what is the selected product.

This requires at least some basic knowledge of one of the mentioned server side technologies, so for now, just press Next >.

The next step is to choose whether to edit your files locally or directly on the server.

The recommended option is Edit local copies on my machine, then upload to server when ready, so choose this one.

Now press the folder icon next to the edit box to choose the folder where all your files related to this project will be stored. Browse through your hard drive, select a folder (or create a new one) and press Next >.

The next step is to select the way you connect to your remote server. Since you have chosen to edit your files locally, select None from the combo box, then press Next > to go to the next step.

The last step is to view a summary of your settings. Press < Back to go through the previous pages, if you feel the need to make any last changes. Otherwise, press Done to finish setting up your new web site.

As you can see, your site has been created and added to the Files panel. You can now add your first file to the site. Press File and choose New from the menu.

We want to insert a simple HTML file, so choose HTML from the Basic Page section then press Create.

You must now save the file in order to add it to the site. Press File and choose Save from the menu.

One important thing you should know about web sites is that one of your HTML files must be named “index.htm” or “index.html”. This file is the one that the browser will first

load when people will access your web site, so it is practically your home page. Insert “index.htm” into the edit box and press Save.

You can see that the file has been added to your web site folder. This concludes the “Set up a Web Site” section of the tutorial.
